My dad is a basketball coach, perfect! So after a quick meeting with the high school athletic director in my town it was decided that my dad would facilitate a 3-day basketball camp with the two P.E. teachers. We started with dribbling, passing, and shooting drills! It was the first time I had seen boys and girls playing the same sport together at this specific high school.
In Peru the custom of using social media is just starting to catch fire. In my town specifically they got accessible internet less than four years ago. Now what does this mean for professional development and Internet use? Well it means that now is the time that Peruvians are in need of education on proper social media etiquette in workplace, and as a modern day Peace Corps Business Volunteer that has become a part of my work duties!
I am proud to report that some of the women have sold both the bracelets and the new greeting cards, but I am even prouder to report that I have seen a physical and emotional change in all 12 of the women who have given up their time each week to learn and explore options to better their lives! The true success is the woman who can’t read but led a small group of her educated peers in a discussion about setting prices, or the woman who could not tie a knot during the first class who asked her peers for help outside of class and is now selling cuffs. Leaders are born when women are given the tools to succeed!
They also latched on to the concept of being role models and empowering the women around them, which was so exciting to hear! Peru is going through a crucial change nationally in regards to gender equality and women´s rights, which makes our work in IGAs for women that much more important.
I have exciting news this week!! My students and I made a video highlighting happiness in Peru and submitted it to the Peace Corps Week video contest. Drumroll please… WE MADE THE FINALS!! We were selected as one of fourteen finalists worldwide and now there is a Facebook contest to see whose picture can get the most likes by Wednesday.
